Julie Iriondo is chief of the Media Relations Branch in the U.S. Census Bureau’s Public Information Office (PIO), where she leads communications strategies and media outreach for Census Bureau data releases and initiatives. Her team develops messaging, news products and events designed to keep the public and media informed about key Census Bureau findings, while also providing media training and communications support to agency leadership and subject-matter experts.
Julie also serves on the editorial board for America Counts: Stories Behind the Numbers, the Census Bureau’s storytelling platform featuring data-driven stories on topics such as housing, employment, business, education and population trends. She has received multiple Census Bureau Bronze Medal Awards — the agency’s highest honorary recognition — including honors for her work on the America Counts launch team, the PIO External Communications support team and the Pulse Surveys communications team.
Before joining the Census Bureau in 2017, Julie spent 27 years as a broadcast journalist, earning recognition for reporting and documentaries on topics ranging from international events to public affairs. She also produced an award-winning image and recruitment campaign for the federal judiciary. Julie holds a bachelor of arts degree in communications with an emphasis in broadcast journalism from Washington State University.
